Isaia 29:1-14

1 Guai ad Ariel, ad Ariel, città dove accampò Davide! Aggiungete anno ad anno, compiano le feste il loro ciclo!

2 Poi stringerò Ariel da presso; vi saranno lamenti e gemiti, ed ella mi sarà come un Ariel.

3 Io porrò il mio campo attorno a te come un cerchio, io ti ricingerò di fortilizi, eleverò contro di te opere d’assedio.

4 Sarai abbassata, parlerai da terra, e la tua parola uscirà sommessamente dalla polvere; la tua voce salirà dal suolo come quella d’uno spettro, e la tua parola sorgerà dalla polvere come un bisbiglio.

5 Ma la moltitudine dei tuoi nemici diventerà come polvere minuta, e la folla di que’ terribili, come pula che vola; e ciò avverrà ad un tratto, in un attimo.

6 Sarà una visitazione dell’Eterno degli eserciti con tuoni, terremoti e grandi rumori, con turbine, tempesta, con fiamma di fuoco divorante.

7 E la folla di tutte le nazioni che, marciano contro ad Ariel, di tutti quelli che attaccano lei e la sua cittadella, e la stringono da presso, sarà come un sogno, come una visione notturna.

8 E come un affamato sogna ed ecco che mangia, poi si sveglia ed ha lo stomaco vuoto, e come una che ha sete sogna che beve, poi si sveglia ed eccolo stanco ed assetato, così avverrà della folla di tutte le nazioni che marciano contro al monte Sion.

9 Stupitevi pure… sarete stupiti! Chiudete pure gli occhi… diventerete ciechi! Costoro sono ubriachi, ma non di vino; barcollano, ma non per bevande spiritose.

10 E’ l’Eterno che ha sparso su voi uno spirito di torpore; ha chiuso i vostri occhi (i profeti), ha velato i vostri capi (i veggenti).

11 Tutte le visioni profetiche son divenute per voi come le parole d’uno scritto sigillato che si desse a uno che sa leggere, dicendogli: "Ti prego, leggi questo!" il quale risponderebbe: "Non posso perch’è sigillato!"

12 Ovvero come uno scritto che si desse ad uno che non sa leggere, dicendogli: "Ti prego, leggi questo!" il quale risponderebbe: "Non so leggere".

13 Il Signore ha detto: Giacché questo popolo s’avvicina a me colla bocca e mi onora con le labbra, mentre il suo cuore è lungi da me e il timore che ha di me non è altro che un comandamento imparato dagli uomini,

14 ecco ch’io continuerò a fare tra questo popolo delle maraviglie, maraviglie su maraviglie; e la saviezza dei suoi savi perirà, e l’intelligenza degl’intelligenti di esso sparirà.

Isaia 29:1-14 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 29

This chapter contains a prophecy concerning the destruction of the temple and city of Jerusalem by the Romans; the character and condition of the people of the Jews, previous to it; the calling of the Gentiles, by the preaching of the Gospel; the ruin of antichrist, and the conversion of the Jews, in the latter day. The siege and destruction of Jerusalem are described in Isa 29:1-6 the disappointment of their enemies, notwithstanding their taking and destroying it, Isa 29:7,8 the stupidity, judicial blindness, and hardness of the Jews, which brought on their ruin, are predicted, Isa 29:9,10 the ignorance of their learned, as well as of their unlearned men, with respect to the Scripture, and the prophecies of it, Isa 29:11,12 their hypocrisy and formality in worship, Isa 29:13 a blast upon all their wisdom and prudence, who thought to be wiser than the Lord, and too many for him, whose folly and atheism are exposed, Isa 29:14-16, and a great change both in Judea and the Gentile world, by the removal of the Gospel from the one to the other, Isa 29:17 the effects of which are, deaf sinners hear the word, dark minds are enlightened, and joy increased among the meek and poor, Isa 29:18,19 the fall of the Jews, or else of antichrist, is foretold, Isa 29:20,21 and the chapter is closed with a promise and prophecy of the conversion of the seed of Abraham and Jacob, Isa 29:22-24.
