Then the men of Judah gave a shout
Taking heart at the sound of the trumpets, and in order to encourage one another, and intimidate the enemy; (See Gill on 1 Samuel 17:20),

and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote
Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah;
possessed them with a panic, so that they fled at once, as follows.

13 Jerobo'am had sent an ambush around to come on them from behind; thus his troops were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them.
14 And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets.
15 Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jerobo'am and all Israel before Abi'jah and Judah.
16 The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand.
17 Abi'jah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell slain of Israel five hundred thousand picked men.
