Deuteronomio 2

1 Y volvimos, y partimos al desierto, camino del mar Bermejo, como el SEÑOR me había dicho; y rodeamos el monte de Seir por muchos días;

2 hasta que el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo:

3 Habéis rodeado este monte bastante tiempo ; volveos al aquilón.

4 Y manda al pueblo, diciendo: Pasando vosotros por el término de vuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seir, ellos tendrán miedo de vosotros; mas vosotros guardaos mucho;

5 no os busquéis pelea con ellos; que no os daré de su tierra ni aun la holladura de la planta de un pie; porque yo he dado por heredad a Esaú el monte de Seir.

6 La comida compraréis de ellos por dinero, y comeréis; y el agua también compraréis de ellos por dinero, y beberéis;

7 pues el SEÑOR tu Dios te ha bendecido en toda obra de tus manos; él sabe que andas por este gran desierto; estos cuarenta años el SEÑOR tu Dios fue contigo; y ninguna cosa te ha faltado.

8 Y pasamos de nuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, por el camino de la llanura de Elat y de Ezión-geber. Y volvimos, y pasamos camino del desierto de Moab.

9 Y el SEÑOR me dijo: No molestes a Moab, ni te busques la guerra con ellos, que no te daré posesión de su tierra; porque yo he dado a Ar por heredad a los hijos de Lot.

10 (Los emitas habitaron en ella antes, pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto como gigantes.

11 Por gigantes eran ellos también contados, como los anaceos; y los moabitas los llaman emitas.

12 Y en Seir habitaron antes los horeos, a los cuales heredaron los hijos de Esaú; y los destruyeron de delante de sí, y moraron en lugar de ellos; como hizo Israel en la tierra de su posesión que les dio el SEÑOR.)

13 Levantaos ahora, y pasad el arroyo de Zered. Y pasamos el arroyo de Zered.

14 Y los días que anduvimos de Cades-barnea hasta que pasamos el arroyo de Zered, fueron treinta y ocho años; hasta que se acabó toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campamento, como el SEÑOR les había jurado.

15 Y también la mano del SEÑOR fue sobre ellos para destruirlos de en medio del campamento, hasta acabarlos.

16 Y aconteció que cuando todos los hombres de guerra fueron acabados por muerte de entre el pueblo,

17 el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo:

18 Tú pasarás hoy el término de Moab, a Ar,

19 y te acercarás delante de los hijos de Amón, no los molestes, ni te revuelves con ellos; porque no te tengo de dar posesión de la tierra de los hijos de Amón; que a los hijos de Lot la he dado por heredad.

20 (Por tierra de gigantes fue también ella tenida; habitaron en ella gigantes en otro tiempo, a los cuales los amonitas llamaban zomzomeos;

21 pueblo grande, y numeroso, y alto, como los anaceos; a los cuales el SEÑOR destruyó de delante de los amonitas , y ellos les heredaron, y habitaron en su lugar,

22 como hizo con los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, que destruyó a los horeos de delante de ellos; y ellos les heredaron, y habitaron en su lugar hasta hoy.

23 Y a los aveos que habitaban en Haserin hasta Gaza, los caftoreos que salieron de Caftor los destruyeron, y habitaron en su lugar.)

24 Levantaos, partid, y pasad el arroyo de Arnón; mira, yo he dado en tu mano a Sehón rey de Hesbón, amorreo, y a su tierra; comienza, tome posesión, y busca la guerra con él.

25 Hoy comenzaré a poner tu miedo y tu espanto sobre los pueblos debajo de todo el cielo, los cuales oirán tu fama, y temblarán, y se angustiarán delante de ti.

26 Y envié embajadores desde el desierto de Cademot a Sehón rey de Hesbón, con palabras de paz, diciendo:

27 Pasaré por tu tierra por el camino; por el camino iré, sin apartarme a diestra ni a siniestra.

28 La comida me venderás por dinero y comeré; el agua también me darás por dinero, y beberé; solamente pasaré a pie;

29 como lo hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seir, y los moabitas que habitan en Ar; hasta que pase el Jordán a la tierra que nos da el SEÑOR nuestro Dios.

30 Mas Sehón rey de Hesbón no quiso que pasásemos por él; porque el SEÑOR tu Dios había endurecido su espíritu, y obstinado su corazón para entregarlo en tu mano, como hasta hoy.

31 Y me dijo el SEÑOR: Mira, ya he comenzado a dar delante de ti a Sehón y a su tierra; comienza, toma posesión, para que heredes su tierra.

32 Y nos salió Sehón al encuentro, él y todo su pueblo, para pelear en Jahaza.

33 Mas el SEÑOR nuestro Dios lo entregó delante de nosotros; y herimos a él y a sus hijos, y a todo su pueblo.

34 Y tomamos entonces todas sus ciudades, y destruimos todas las ciudades, hombres, y mujeres, y niños; no dejamos ninguno.

35 Solamente tomamos para nosotros las bestias, y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos tomado.

36 Desde Aroer, que está junto a la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en el arroyo, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que escapase de nosotros; todas las entregó el SEÑOR nuestro Dios delante de nosotros.

37 Solamente a la tierra de los hijos de Amón no llegaste, ni a todo lo que está a la orilla del arroyo de Jaboc ni a las ciudades del monte, ni a lugar alguno que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios había prohibido.

Deuteronomio 2 Commentary

Chapter 2

The Edomites to be spared. (1-7) The Moabites and Ammonites to be spared. (8-23) The Amorites to be destroyed. (24-37)

Verses 1-7 Only a short account of the long stay of Israel in the wilderness is given. God not only chastised them for their murmuring and unbelief, but prepared them for Canaan; by humbling them for sin, teaching them to mortify their lusts, to follow God, and to comfort themselves in him. Though Israel may be long kept waiting for deliverance and enlargement, it will come at last. Before God brought Israel to destroy their enemies in Canaan, he taught them to forgive their enemies in Edom. They must not, under pretence of God's covenant and conduct, think to seize all they could lay hands on. Dominion is not founded in grace. God's Israel shall be well placed, but must not expect to be placed alone in the midst of the earth. Religion must never be made a cloak for injustice. Scorn to be beholden to Edomites, when thou hast an all-sufficient God to depend upon. Use what thou hast, use it cheerfully. Thou hast experienced the care of the Divine providence, never use any crooked methods for thy supply. All this is equally to be applied to the experience of the believer.

Verses 8-23 We have the origin of the Moabites, Edomites, and Ammonites. Moses also gives an instance older than any of these; the Caphtorims drove the Avims out of their country. These revolutions show what uncertain things wordly possessions are. It was so of old, and ever will be so. Families decline, and from them estates are transferred to families that increase; so little continuance is there in these things. This is recorded to encourage the children of Israel. If the providence of God has done this for Moabites and Ammonites, much more would his promise do it for Israel, his peculiar people. Cautions are given not to meddle with Moabites and Ammonites. Even wicked men must not be wronged. God gives and preserves outward blessings to wicked men; these are not the best things, he has better in store for his own children.

Verses 24-37 God tried his people, by forbidding them to meddle with the rich countries of Moab and Ammon. He gives them possession of the country of the Amorites. If we keep from what God forbids, we shall not lose by our obedience. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; and he gives it to whom he pleases; but when there is no express direction, none can plead his grant for such proceedings. Though God assured the Israelites that the land should be their own, yet they must contend with the enemy. What God gives we must endeavour to get. What a new world did Israel now come into! Much more joyful will the change be, which holy souls will experience, when they remove out of the wilderness of this world to the better country, that is, the heavenly, to the city that has foundations. Let us, by reflecting upon God's dealings with his people Israel, be led to meditate upon our years spent in vanity, through our transgressions. But happy are those whom Jesus has delivered from the wrath to come. To whom he hath given the earnest of his Spirit in their hearts. Their inheritance cannot be affected by revolutions of kingdoms, or changes in earthly possessions.

In this chapter Moses goes on with his account of the affairs of the people of Israel, and what befell them, how they turned into the wilderness again; but passes over in silence their travels there, till they came to Mount Self, where having been some time they were bid to depart, De 2:1-3, and were directed not to meddle with the Edomites, or take anything from them, but pay them for what they should have of them, since they lacked not, De 2:4-8, nor to distress the Moabites, of whose country, as formerly inhabited, and also of Edom, some account is given, De 2:9-12, when they were bid to go over the brook Zered, to which from their coming from Kadeshbarnea was the space of thirty eight years, in which time the former generation was consumed, De 2:13-16 and now passing along the borders of Moab, they were ordered not to meddle with nor distress the children of Ammon, of whose land also, and the former inhabitants of it, an account is given, De 2:17-23, then passing over the river Arnon, they are bid to fight with Sihon king of the Amorites, and possess his land, De 2:24,25 to whom they sent messengers, desiring leave to pass through his land, and to furnish them with provisions for their money, as the Edomites and Moabites had done, De 2:26-29 but he refusing, this gave them an opportunity to attack him, in which they succeeded, slew him and his people, and took possession of his country, De 2:30-37.
