Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.1 They acquired property there2 and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.328
Jacob lived in Egypt4 seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.529
When the time drew near for Israel6 to die,7 he called for his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes,8 put your hand under my thigh9 and promise that you will show me kindness10 and faithfulness.11 Do not bury me in Egypt,
but when I rest with my fathers,12 carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried."13 "I will do as you say," he said.
"Swear to me,"14 he said. Then Joseph swore to him,15 and Israel16 worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.a17
