Knew that he had been a long time (gnou oti polun hdh cronon ecei). How Jesus "knew" (gnou, second aorist active participle of ginwskw) we are not told, whether supernatural knowledge ( Matthew 2:24 ) or observation or overhearing people's comments. In hdh ecei we have a progressive present active indicative, "he has already been having much time" (cronon, accusative of extent of time). Wouldest thou be made whole? (Telei ugih genesqai;). "Dost thou wish to become whole?" Predicate nominative ugih with genesqai (second aorist middle infinitive). It was a pertinent and sympathetic question.
