Psalm 62:3-12

Listen to Psalm 62:3-12
3 How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like 1a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his 2high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. 3They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone, O 4my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
6 5He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my 6salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, 7my refuge is God.
8 8Trust in him at all times, O people; 9pour out your heart before him; God is 10a refuge for us. Selah
9 11Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate 12are a delusion; in the balances they go up; 13they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion; 14set no vain hopes on robbery; 15if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11 16Once God has spoken; 17twice have I heard this: that 18power belongs to God,
12 and that to you, O Lord, 19belongs steadfast love. For you will 20render to a man according to his work.

Psalm 62:3-12 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, [A Psalm] of David. Concerning "Jeduthun," See Gill on "Ps 39:1," title. Kimchi thinks this psalm was written concerning the captivity; and Jarchi twtdh le, concerning the decrees and judgments made against Israel by their enemies; and so some of their ancient expositions {d}; but it seems to have been composed by David when in distress, either through Saul and his courtiers, or by reason of the conspiracy of Absalom. Theodoret takes it to be a prophecy of the persecution of Antiochus in the times of the Maccabees.

{d} Vid. Yalkut Simeoni in loc.
