Like a hunted1 gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd,2 each will return to his own people, each will flee3 to his native land.415

She will never be inhabited21 or lived in through all generations; no Arab22 will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flocks there.
But desert creatures23 will lie there, jackals24 will fill her houses; there the owls25 will dwell, and there the wild goats26 will leap about.
Hyenas27 will howl in her strongholds,28 jackals29 in her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand,30 and her days will not be prolonged.31
