Mourn for her, all who live around her, all who know her fame;1 say, 'How broken is the mighty scepter,2 how broken the glorious staff !'
"Come down from your glory and sit on the parched ground,3 O inhabitants of the Daughter of Dibon,4 for he who destroys Moab will come up against you and ruin your fortified cities.519
Stand by the road and watch, you who live in Aroer.6 Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, ask them, 'What has happened?'
Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered. Wail7 and cry out! Announce by the Arnon8 that Moab is destroyed.
Judgment has come to the plateau9-- to Holon,10 Jahzah11 and Mephaath,1222
to Dibon,13 Nebo14 and Beth Diblathaim,
to Kiriathaim,15 Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,1624
to Kerioth17 and Bozrah18-- to all the towns19 of Moab, far and near.
Moab's horna20 is cut off; her arm21 is broken," declares the LORD.
"Make her drunk,22 for she has defied23 the LORD. Let Moab wallow in her vomit;24 let her be an object of ridicule.2527
Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?26 Was she caught among thieves,27 that you shake your head28 in scorn29 whenever you speak of her?
