What pleasure1 would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?2 What would he gain if your ways were blameless?3
"Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?4
Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins5 endless?6
You demanded security7 from your brothers for no reason;8 you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked.9
You gave no water10 to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,11
though you were a powerful man, owning land12-- an honored man,13 living on it.14
And you sent widows15 away empty-handed16 and broke the strength of the fatherless.17
That is why snares18 are all around you,19 why sudden peril terrifies you,20
why it is so dark21 you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.22
"Is not God in the heights of heaven?23 And see how lofty are the highest stars!
Yet you say, 'What does God know?24 Does he judge through such darkness?25
