Or a man may be chastened1 on a bed of pain2 with constant distress in his bones,3
so that his very being finds food4 repulsive and his soul loathes the choicest meal.5
His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his bones,6 once hidden, now stick out.7
His soul draws near to the pit,8 and his life to the messengers of death.9
