1But a certainmannamedAnanias, withSapphirahiswife, sold a possession,2And kept back part of the price, hiswifealso being privy to it, andbrought a certainpart, and laid it at the apostles'feet.3ButPetersaid , Ananias, why hath Satanfilledthinehearttolie to the HolyGhost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?4
Whiles it remained , was it not thine own ? and after it was sold , was it notin thine ownpower?whyhast thou conceivedthisthinginthineheart? thou hastnotlied unto men,but unto God.5AndAnaniashearingthesewords fell down , and gave up the ghost : andgreatfearcameonall them that heard these things.6And the young menarose , woundhimup , and carried him out , and buried him.
7And it wasabout the space of threehoursafter, whenhiswife, notknowing what was done , came in .
8AndPeteranswered unto her,Tellmewhether ye sold the land for so much? And she said , Yea, for so much.9ThenPetersaiduntoher,How is it thatye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?behold , the feet of them which have buriedthyhusband are at the door, and shall carrytheeout .
10Then fell she downstraightwayathisfeet, and yielded up the ghost : and the young men came in , and foundherdead, and, carrying her forth , buried her byherhusband.11Andgreatfearcameuponall the church, andupon as many asheard these things.12Andby the hands of the apostlesweremanysignsandwonderswroughtamong the people; (and they wereall with one accordinSolomon'sporch.13And of the restdurst no man join himself to them:but the peoplemagnifiedthem.14Andbelieverswere the moreadded to the Lord, multitudesboth of menand women.)
15Insomuch that they brought forth the sickintoa the streets, andlaid them onbedsandcouches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadowsome of them.16Therecamealso a multitude out of the cities round aboutuntoJerusalem, bringingsick folks, and them which were vexedwithuncleanspirits: and they were healed every one.17Then the high priest rose up , and all they that were withhim, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,b18Andlaidtheirhandson the apostles, andputthemin the commonprison.19But the angel of the Lordbynightopened the prisondoors, andbroughtthemforth , and said ,
20Go , standandspeakin the temple to the peopleall the words of thislife.21And when they heard that, they enteredinto the temple early in the morning , andtaught . But the high priestcame , and they that were withhim, and called the counciltogether , andall the senate of the children of Israel, andsentto the prison to havethembrought .
22But when the officerscame , and foundthemnotin the prison, they returned , andtold ,
23Saying , The prisontruly found weshutwithallsafety, and the keepersstandingwithoutbefore the doors:but when we had opened , we found no manwithin.24Nowwhenthe high priestand the captain of the templeand the chief priestsheardthesethings, they doubtedofthemwhereuntothis would grow .
25
Then cameoneandtoldthem, saying , Behold , the menwhom ye putinprisonarestandingin the temple, andteaching the people.26Thenwent the captainwith the officers, and broughtthemwithoutviolence:for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned .
27And when they had broughtthem, they set them before the council:and the high priestaskedthem,28Saying , Didnot we straitlycommandyou that ye shouldnotteachinthisname?and, behold , ye have filledJerusalem with yourdoctrine, andintend to bringthisman'sblooduponus.29ThenPeterand the other apostlesanswered and said , We ought to obeyGodratherthanmen.30
The God of ourfathers raised upJesus, whomyeslew and hangedon a tree.31Him hath Godexalted with his right hand to be a Princeand a Saviour, for to giverepentance to Israel, andforgiveness of sins.32Andwearehiswitnesses of thesethings;and so is also the HolyGhost, whomGod hath given to them that obeyhim.33When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slaythem.34Then stood there uponein the council, a Pharisee, namedGamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostlesfortha little space;35Andsaiduntothem, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselveswhat ye intend to do as touchingthesemen.36Forbeforethesedays rose upTheudas, boastinghimself to besomebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves : who was slain ; andall, as many asobeyedchim, were scattered , andbroughttonought.37After this man rose upJudas of Galileein the days of the taxing, and drew awaymuchpeopleafterhim: he alsoperished ; andall, even as many asobeyeddhim, were dispersed .
38Andnow I say unto you,Refrainfromthesemen, andletthemalone : forifthiscounselorthisworkbeofmen, it will come to nought :
39Butif it beofGod, ye cannotoverthrowit; lest haply ye be foundeven to fight against God.40And to him they agreed : and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they shouldnotspeakin the name of Jesus, andletthemgo .
41And they departedfrom the presence of the council, rejoicingthat they were counted worthy to suffer shameforhisname.42Anddailyin the temple, and in everyhouse, they ceasednot to teachandpreachJesusChrist.
