2And the soldiersplatted a crownofthorns, and put it onhishead,and they put onhim a purplerobe,3Andsaid , Hail , King of the Jews!and they smotehim with their hands.4Pilatethereforewentforthagain,andsaith unto them,Behold, I bringhimforth to you,that ye may knowthat I findnofaultinhim.5ThencameJesusforth,wearing the crown of thorns,and the purplerobe.And Pilate saith unto them,Behold the man!6When the chief prieststhereforeandofficerssawhim, they cried out , saying , Crucify him, crucify him. Pilatesaith unto them,Takeyehim,andcrucify him: forIfindnofaultinhim.7
The Jewsansweredhim,Wehave a law,andbyourlaw he ought to die , because he madehimself the Son of God.8WhenPilatethereforeheardthatsaying, he was the moreafraid ;
9Andwentagaininto the judgment hall,andsaith unto Jesus,Whenceartthou?ButJesusgavehimnoanswer.10ThensaithPilate unto him, Speakest thounot unto me? knowest thounotthat I havepower to crucifythee,andhavepower to releasethee?11Jesusanswered , Thou couldest havenopower at all againstme,except it weregiventhee from above:thereforehe that deliveredme unto theehath the greatersin.12
And fromthenceforthPilatesought to releasehim:but the Jews cried out , saying , If thou let this mango , thou artnotCaesar'sfriend:whosoevermakethhimself a king speaketh againstCaesar.13
When Pilatethereforeheardthatsaying, he broughtJesusforth,and sat downin the judgment seatin a place that is called the Pavement,but in the Hebrew,Gabbatha.14And it was the preparation of the passover,andabout the sixthhour:and he saith unto the Jews,BeholdyourKing!15But they cried out , Away with him, away with him, crucifyhim.Pilatesaith unto them, Shall I crucifyyourKing? The chief priestsanswered , We havenokingbutCaesar.16Then delivered hehimtherefore unto themto be crucified . And they tookJesus,and led him away .
17And he bearinghiscross went forthinto a placecalled the place of a skull,which is called in the HebrewGolgotha:18Where they crucifiedhim,andtwootherwithhim, on either side one , andJesus in the midst.19AndPilatewrote a title,andput it on the cross.And the writingwas , JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.20Thistitlethenreadmany of the Jews:for the placewhereJesus was crucifiedwasnigh to the city:and it waswritten in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.21Thensaid the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate,Writenot, The King of the Jews;butthathesaid , I amKing of the Jews.22Pilateanswered , What I have written I have written .
23Then the soldiers,when they had crucifiedJesus,tookhisgarments,andmadefourparts, to everysoldier a part; and also his coat:now the coatwas without seam,wovenafrom the topthroughout .
They saidthereforeamongthemselves, Let usnotrendit,but cast lotsforit,whose it shall be : that the scripture might be fulfilled , whichsaith , They partedmyraiment among them,andformyvesture they did castlots. These thingstherefore the soldiersdid .
25Now there stoodby the cross of Jesushismother,andhismother'ssister,Mary the wife of Cleophas,bandMaryMagdalene.26
When Jesusthereforesaw his mother,and the disciple standing by , whom he loved , he saith unto hismother,Woman,beholdthyson!27Then saith he to the disciple,Beholdthymother!Andfromthathour that discipletookherunto his own home.
28Afterthis,Jesusknowingthat all thingswerenowaccomplished , that the scripture might be fulfilled , saith , I thirst .29Now there was set a vesselfull of vinegar:and they filled a spunge with vinegar,and put it uponhyssop, and put it to hismouth.30WhenJesustherefore had received the vinegar, he said , It is finished : and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.31
The Jewstherefore,because it was the preparation,that the bodiesshouldnotremainupon the crosson the sabbath day, (for that sabbath daywas an high day,) besoughtPilatethattheirlegs might be broken , and that they might be taken away .
32Thencame the soldiers,andbrake the legs of thefirst,and of the otherwhich was crucified withhim.33Butwhen they cametoJesus, and saw that he was deadalready, they brakenothislegs:34Butone of the soldiers with a spearpiercedhisside,andforthwith came there outbloodandwater.35And he that saw it bare record , andhisrecordistrue: and heknoweththat he saithtrue,thatye might believe .
36For these things were done , that the scripture should be fulfilled , A bone of himshallnot be broken .
37Andagainanotherscripturesaith , They shall lookon him whom they pierced .
38AndafterthisJosephofArimathaea,being a disciple of Jesus,butsecretlyforfear of the Jews,besoughtPilatethat he might take away the body of Jesus:andPilate gave him leave . He cametherefore,andtook the body of Jesus.39And there camealsoNicodemus,which at the firstcametoJesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrhandaloes,about an hundredpound weight.
40Then took they the body of Jesus,andwoundit in linen clotheswith the spices,as the manner of the Jewsis to bury .
41Nowin the placewhere he was crucified there was a garden;andin the garden a newsepulchre,whereinwasnevermanyetlaid .
42There laid theyJesusthereforebecause of the Jews'preparation day; for the sepulchrewas nigh at hand.
