The a1oraclewhichHabakkuk the prophetsaw.
22Howlong, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear ? I cry out to You, "Violence !" Yet You do 3not save.
3Why do You make me 4seeiniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness ? Yes, 5destruction and violence are before me; 6Strifeexists and contentionarises.
4Therefore the 7law is bignored And justicecis neverupheld. For the wicked8surround the righteous ; Thereforejusticecomes out 9perverted.
"10Look among the nations ! Observe ! Be astonished ! 11Wonder ! Because I am doing12something in your days - You would not believeifdyou were told.
"For behold, I am 13raising up the Chaldeans, That efierce and impetuouspeople Who marchfthroughout the earth To g14seizedwellingplaces which are not theirs.
"They are dreaded and 15feared ; Their 16justice and hauthorityioriginate with themselves.
"Their 17horses are swifterthanleopards And jkeenerthan18wolves in the evening. Their khorsemencomegalloping, Their horsemencome from afar ; They fly like an 19eagleswooping down to devour.
9"All of them come for violence. lTheir horde of 20faces moves forward. They collectcaptives like sand.
"They 21mock at kings And rulers are a laughing matter to them. They 22laugh at everyfortress And 23heap up rubble to capture it.
11"Then they will sweepthrough like the 24wind and pass on. But they will be held25guilty, They whose26strength is their god."
Are You not from 27everlasting, O LORD, my God, my HolyOne ? We will not die. You, O LORD, have 28appointed them to judge ; And You, O 29Rock, have established them to correct.
Your eyes are too30pure to mapproveevil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor. Why do You 31look with favor On those who deal32treacherously ? Why are You 33silent when the wicked34swallow up Those morerighteousthan they?
Why have You mademen like the fish of the sea, Like creepingthingswithout a ruler over them?
The Chaldeans 35bringall of them up with a hook, 36Drag them away with their net, And gather them together in their fishingnet. Therefore they rejoice and are glad.
16Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net And nburnincense to their fishingnet ; Because through 37thesethings their ocatch is plarge, And their food is qplentiful.
Will they thereforeempty their 38net And continually39slaynationswithoutsparing ?
