54Peter had followed Him at a distance, 1right into 2the courtyard of the highpriest; and he was sitting with the aofficers and 3warming himself at the bfire.
55Now the chiefpriests and the wholec4Council kept trying to obtaintestimonyagainstJesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.
For many were givingfalsetestimonyagainst Him, but their testimony was not consistent.
57Somestood up and began to givefalsetestimonyagainst Him, saying,
"We heard Him say, '5I will destroythisdtemplemade with hands, and in threedays I will buildanothermadewithouthands.' "
Not even in thisrespect was their testimonyconsistent.
The highprieststood up and came forward and questionedJesus, saying, "Do You not answer? eWhat is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
616But He keptsilent and did not answer. 7Again the highpriest was questioning Him, and fsaying to Him, "Are You gthe Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
And Jesussaid, "I am; and you shall see8THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 9COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."6310Tearing his clothes, the highpriestsaid, "Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses?
"You have heard the 11blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they allcondemned Him to be deserving of death.
65Somebegan to 12spit at Him, and h13to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "14Prophesy!" And the officersireceived Him with jslaps in the face.
6615As Peter was below in 16the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the highpriestcame,
and seeingPeter17warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the 18Nazarene."
But he denied it, saying, "I neitherknownorunderstandwhat you are talking about." And he 19went out onto the kporch.l and a roostercrowed.#2871
The servant-girlsaw him, and beganoncemore to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!"
But again20he denied it. And after a littlewhile the bystanders were againsaying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, 21for you are a Galileantoo."
But he began to mcurse and swear, "I do not knowthisman you are talking about!"
72Immediately a roostercrowed a secondtime. And PeterrememberedhowJesus had made the remark to him, "Before22a roostercrowstwice, you will deny Me threetimes."nAnd he began to weep.
