Psalm 86:6-16

Listen to Psalm 86:6-16
6 1Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; And give heed to the voice of my supplications!
7 In 2the day of my trouble I shall call upon You, For 3You will answer me.
8 There is 4no one like You among the gods, O Lord, Nor are there any works 5like Yours.
9 6All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And they shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are 7great and 8do wondrous deeds; You alone 9are God.
11 10Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; 11Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will 12give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And will glorify Your name forever.
13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great, And You have 13delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14 O God, arrogant men have 14risen up against me, And a band of violent men have sought my life, And they have not set You before them.
15 But You, O Lord, are a God 15merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
16 16Turn to me, and be gracious to me; Oh 17grant Your strength to Your servant, And save the 18son of Your handmaid.

Psalm 86:6-16 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 86

\\<>\\. The title is the same with the Seventeenth Psalm, and the subject of it is much alike: it was written by David, when in distress, and his life was sought after; very likely when he was persecuted by Saul, and fled from him; so Aben Ezra, Jarchi, and Kimchi: and as he was a type of Christ in his afflictions, as well as in his exalted state, it may not be unfitly applied to him, as it is by some interpreters. The Syriac inscription of it is, ``for David, when he built an house for the Lord; and a prophecy of the calling of the Gentiles; and moreover, a prayer of a peculiar righteous man.'' Theodoret thinks it predicts the siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrians, and Hezekiah's hope in God.
