1 Egipto invade a Judá
Cuando Roboam estaba fuerte y firmemente establecido, abandonó la ley del Señor
y todo Israel lo siguió en este pecado.

2 Debido a que fueron infieles al Señor
, el rey Sisac de Egipto subió y atacó Jerusalén en el quinto año del reinado de Roboam.

3 Llegó con mil doscientos carros, sesenta mil caballos
y un ejército incontable de soldados de infantería, integrado por libios, suquienos y etíopes.

4 Sisac conquistó las ciudades fortificadas de Judá y luego avanzó para atacar a Jerusalén.

5 Entonces el profeta Semaías se reunió con Roboam y con los líderes de Judá, quienes habían huido a Jerusalén por causa de Sisac. Semaías les dijo:
—Esto dice el Señor
: “Ustedes me abandonaron, y por eso yo los abandono en manos de Sisac”.

6 Entonces los líderes de Israel y el rey se humillaron y dijeron:
—¡El Señor
es justo al hacer esto con nosotros!

7 Cuando el Señor
vio el cambio de actitud en ellos, le dio este mensaje a Semaías: «Puesto que el pueblo se ha humillado, no lo destruiré completamente y pronto le daré cierto alivio. No usaré a Sisac para derramar mi enojo sobre Jerusalén;

8 pero serán súbditos de Sisac, para que conozcan la diferencia entre servirme a mí y servir a los gobernantes terrenales».

9 Entonces el rey Sisac de Egipto subió y atacó Jerusalén. Saqueó los tesoros del templo del Señor
y del palacio real; robó todo, incluso los escudos de oro que Salomón había hecho.

10 Tiempo después, el rey Roboam los reemplazó con escudos de bronce y los confió al cuidado de los comandantes de la guardia, quienes protegían la entrada del palacio real.

11 Cada vez que el rey iba al templo del Señor
, los guardias llevaban los escudos y luego los devolvían al cuarto de guardia.

12 Como Roboam se humilló, se apartó el enojo del Señor
y no lo destruyó por completo. Aún quedaban algunas cosas buenas en la tierra de Judá.

13 Resumen del reinado de Roboam
El rey Roboam se estableció firmemente en Jerusalén y siguió gobernando. Tenía cuarenta y un años cuando subió al trono y reinó diecisiete años en Jerusalén, la ciudad que el Señor
había elegido entre todas las tribus de Israel como el lugar para honrar su nombre. Su madre era una mujer de Amón que se llamaba Naama.

14 Fue un rey malvado, porque no buscó al Señor
con todo el corazón.

15 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Roboam, desde el principio hasta el fin, están anotados en

que forman parte del registro genealógico. Roboam y Jeroboam estaban constantemente en guerra el uno contra el otro.

16 Cuando Roboam murió, lo enterraron en la Ciudad de David. Luego su hijo Abías lo sucedió en el trono.

Chapter 12

Rehoboam, forsaking the Lord, is punished.

- When Rehoboam was so strong that he supposed he had nothing to fear from Jeroboam, he cast off his outward profession of godliness. It is very common, but very lamentable, that men, who in distress or danger, or near death, seem much engaged in seeking and serving God, throw aside all their religion when they have received a merciful deliverance. God quickly brought troubles upon Judah, to awaken the people to repentance, before their hearts were hardened. Thus it becomes us, when we are under the rebukes of Providence, to justify God, and to judge ourselves. If we have humbled hearts under humbling providences, the affliction has done its work; it shall be removed, or the property of it be altered. The more God's service is compared with other services, the more reasonable and easy it will appear. Are the laws of temperance thought hard? The effects of intemperance will be found much harder. The service of God is perfect liberty; the service of our lusts is complete slavery. Rehoboam was never rightly fixed in his religion. He never quite cast off God; yet he engaged not his heart to seek the Lord. See what his fault was; he did not serve the Lord, because he did not seek the Lord. He did not pray, as Solomon, for wisdom and grace; he did not consult the word of God, did not seek to that as his oracle, nor follow its directions. He made nothing of his religion, because he did not set his heart to it, nor ever came up to a steady resolution in it. He did evil, because he never was determined for good.
