Josué 23

Despedida de Josué

1 Mucho tiempo después de que el SEÑOR le diera a Israel paz con sus enemigos cananeos, Josué, anciano y cansado,

2 convocó a toda la nación, incluyendo a sus líderes, jefes, jueces y oficiales, y les dijo: «Yo ya estoy muy viejo, y los años me pesan.

3 Ustedes han visto todo lo que el SEÑOR su Dios ha hecho con todas aquellas naciones a favor de ustedes, pues él peleó las batallas por ustedes.

4 Yo repartí por sorteo, como herencia de sus tribus, tanto las tierras de las naciones que aún quedan como las de aquellas que ya han sido conquistadas, entre el río Jordán y el mar Mediterráneo.

5 El SEÑOR su Dios expulsará a esas naciones de estas tierras, y ustedes tomarán posesión de ellas, tal como él lo ha prometido.

6 »Por lo tanto, esfuércense por cumplir todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés. No se aparten de esa ley para nada.

7 No se mezclen con las naciones que aún quedan entre ustedes. No rindan culto a sus dioses ni juren por ellos.

8 Permanezcan fieles al SEÑOR vuestro Dios, como lo han hecho hasta ahora.

9 El SEÑOR ha expulsado a esas grandes naciones que se han enfrentado con ustedes, y hasta ahora ninguna de ellas ha podido resistirlos.

10 Uno solo de ustedes hace huir a mil enemigos, porque el SEÑOR pelea por ustedes, tal como lo ha prometido.

11 Hagan, pues, todo lo que está de su parte para amar al SEÑOR su Dios.

12 Porque si ustedes le dan la espalda a Dios y se unen a las naciones que aún quedan entre ustedes, mezclándose y formando matrimonios con ellas,

13 tengan por cierto que el SEÑOR su Dios no expulsará de entre ustedes a esas naciones. Por el contrario, ellas serán como red y trampa contra ustedes, como látigos en sus espaldas y espinas en sus ojos, hasta que ustedes desaparezcan de esta buena tierra que el SEÑOR su Dios les ha entregado.

14 »Por mi parte, yo estoy a punto de ir por el camino que todo mortal transita. Ustedes bien saben que ninguna de las buenas promesas del SEÑOR su Dios ha dejado de cumplirse al pie de la letra. Todas se han hecho realidad, pues él no ha faltado a ninguna de ellas.

15 Pero así como el SEÑOR su Dios ha cumplido sus buenas promesas, también descargará sobre ustedes todo tipo de calamidades, hasta que cada uno sea borrado de esta tierra que él les ha entregado.

16 Si no cumplen con el pacto que el SEÑOR su Dios les ha ordenado, sino que siguen a otros dioses, adorándolos e inclinándose ante ellos, tengan por seguro que la ira del SEÑOR se descargará sobre ustedes y que serán borrados de la buena tierra que el SEÑOR les ha entregado».

Chapter 23

Joshua's exhortation before his death. (1-10) Joshua warns the people of idolatry. (11-16)

Verses 1-10 Joshua was old and dying, let them observe what he said now. He put them in mind of the great things God had done for them in his days. He exhorted them to be very courageous. Keep with care, do with diligence, and regard with sincerity what is written. Also, very cautiously to endeavour that the heathen idolatry may be forgotten, so that it may never be revived. It is sad that among Christians the names of the heathen gods are so commonly used, and made so familiar as they are. Joshua exhorts them to be very constant. There might be many things amiss among them, but they had not forsaken the Lord their God; the way to make people better, is to make the best of them.

Verses 11-16 Would we cleave to the Lord, we must always stand upon our guard, for many a soul is lost through carelessness. Love the Lord your God, and you will not leave him. Has God been thus true to you? Be not you false to him. He is faithful that has promised, ( Hebrews 10:23 ) . The experience of every Christian witnesses the same truth. Conflicts may have been severe and long, trials great and many; but at the last he will acknowledge that goodness and mercy followed him all the days of his life. Joshua states the fatal consequences of going back; know for a certainty it will be your ruin. The first step would be, friendship with idolaters; the next would be, marrying with them; the end of that would be, serving their gods. Thus the way of sin is down-hill, and those who have fellowship with sinners, cannot avoid having fellowship with sin. He describes the destruction he warns them of. The goodness of the heavenly Canaan, and the free and sure grant God has made of it, will add to the misery of those who shall for ever be shut out from it. Nothing will make them see how wretched they are, so much, as to see how happy they might have been. Let us watch and pray against temptation. Let us trust in God's faithfulness, love, and power; let us plead his promises, and cleave to his commandments, then we shall be happy in life, in death, and for ever.

INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA 23

Joshua being old, convenes the states of Israel a little before his death, Jos 23:1,2; and in his address to them observes what God had done for them, and would do, Jos 23:3-5; and exhorts them to keep the commandments of God, and cleave to him, and not to mix with the Gentiles, and join with them in idolatrous practices, and then it would be well with them, Jos 23:6-11; but otherwise should they join with them, and depart from the Lord, who had so faithfully and punctually performed every good thing he had promised them, they might expect all evils and calamities, utter ruin and destruction, to befall them, Jos 23:12-16.
