Young's Literal Translation (YLT) New International Version (NIV)
And in the day of the Pentecost being fulfilled, they were all with one accord at the same place, 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
and there came suddenly out of the heaven a sound as of a bearing violent breath, and it filled all the house where they were sitting, 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
and there appeared to them divided tongues, as it were of fire; it sat also upon each one of them, 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, according as the Spirit was giving them to declare. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation of those under the heaven, 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
and the rumour of this having come, the multitude came together, and was confounded, because they were each one hearing them speaking in his proper dialect, 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
and they were all amazed, and did wonder, saying one unto another, `Lo, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
and how do we hear, each in our proper dialect, in which we were born? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and those dwelling in Mesopotamia, in Judea also, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia also, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya, that [are] along Cyrene, and the strangers of Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
Cretes and Arabians, we did hear them speaking in our tongues the great things of God.' 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one unto another, `What would this wish to be?' 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
and others mocking said, -- `They are full of sweet wine;' 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. "
and Peter having stood up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and declared to them, `Men, Jews! and all those dwelling in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and harken to my sayings, 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
for these are not drunken, as ye take it up, for it is the third hour of the day. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!
`But this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel: 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
and also upon My men-servants, and upon My maid-servants, in those days, I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy; 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
and I will give wonders in the heaven above, and signs upon the earth beneath -- blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke, 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
the sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the day of the Lord -- the great and illustrious; 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
and it shall be, every one -- whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, he shall be saved. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
`Men, Israelites! hear these words, Jesus the Nazarene, a man approved of God among you by mighty works, and wonders, and signs, that God did through him in the midst of you, according as also ye yourselves have known; 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
this one, by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, being given out, having taken by lawless hands, having crucified -- ye did slay; 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
whom God did raise up, having loosed the pains of the death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it, 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
for David saith in regard to him: I foresaw the Lord always before me -- because He is on my right hand -- that I may not be moved; 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
because of this was my heart cheered, and my tongue was glad, and yet -- my flesh also shall rest on hope, 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope,
because Thou wilt not leave my soul to hades, nor wilt Thou give Thy Kind One to see corruption; 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
Thou didst make known to me ways of life, Thou shalt fill me with joy with Thy countenance. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
`Men, brethren! it is permitted to speak with freedom unto you concerning the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us unto this day; 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
a prophet, therefore, being, and knowing that with an oath God did swear to him, out of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, to raise up the Christ, to sit upon his throne, 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
having foreseen, he did speak concerning the rising again of the Christ, that his soul was not left to hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.
`This Jesus did God raise up, of which we are all witnesses; 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.
at the right hand then of God having been exalted -- also the promise of the Holy Spirit having received from the Father -- he was shedding forth this, which now ye see and hear; 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
for David did not go up to the heavens, and he saith himself: The Lord saith to my lord, Sit thou at my right hand, 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
till I make thy foes thy footstool; 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '
assuredly, therefore, let all the house of Israel know, that both Lord and Christ did God make him -- this Jesus whom ye did crucify.' 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
And having heard, they were pricked to the heart; they say also to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, `What shall we do, men, brethren?' 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
and Peter said unto them, `Reform, and be baptized each of you on the name of Jesus Christ, to remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
for to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all those afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.' 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Also with many more other words he was testifying and exhorting, saying, `Be saved from this perverse generation;' 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
then those, indeed, who did gladly receive his word were baptized, and there were added on that day, as it were, three thousand souls, 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
and they were continuing stedfastly in the teaching of the apostles, and the fellowship, and the breaking of the bread, and the prayers. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
And fear came on every soul, many wonders also and signs were being done through the apostles, 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
and all those believing were at the same place, and had all things common, 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
and the possessions and the goods they were selling, and were parting them to all, according as any one had need. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
Daily also continuing with one accord in the temple, breaking also at every house bread, they were partaking of food in gladness and simplicity of heart, 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
praising God, and having favour with all the people, and the Lord was adding those being saved every day to the assembly. 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
