New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Listen to this message that the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel and Judah -- the entire family I rescued from Egypt: 1 Hear this word the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel--against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
"From among all the families on the earth, I chose you alone. That is why I must punish you for all your sins." 2 "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins."
Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction? 3 Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?
Does a lion ever roar in a thicket without first finding a victim? Does a young lion growl in its den without first catching its prey? 4 Does a lion roar in the thicket when he has no prey? Does he growl in his den when he has caught nothing?
Does a bird ever get caught in a trap that has no bait? Does a trap ever spring shut when there's nothing there to catch? 5 Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground where no snare has been set? Does a trap spring up from the earth when there is nothing to catch?
When the war trumpet blares, shouldn't the people be alarmed? When disaster comes to a city, isn't it because the LORD planned it? 6 When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?
"But always, first of all, I warn you through my servants the prophets. I, the Sovereign LORD, have now done this." 7 Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.
The lion has roared -- tremble in fear! The Sovereign LORD has spoken -- I dare not refuse to proclaim his message! 8 The lion has roared-- who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken-- who can but prophesy?
Announce this to the leaders of Philistia and Egypt: "Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria, and witness the scandalous spectacle of all Israel's crimes." 9 Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people."
"My people have forgotten what it means to do right," says the LORD. "Their fortresses are filled with wealth taken by theft and violence. 10 "They do not know how to do right," declares the LORD, "who hoard plunder and loot in their fortresses."
Therefore," says the Sovereign LORD, "an enemy is coming! He will surround them and shatter their defenses. Then he will plunder all their fortresses." 11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "An enemy will overrun the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your fortresses."
This is what the LORD says: "A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion's mouth will recover only two legs and a piece of ear. So it will be when the Israelites in Samaria are rescued with only a broken chair and a tattered pillow. 12 This is what the LORD says: "As a shepherd saves from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites be saved, those who sit in Samaria on the edge of their beds and in Damascus on their couches."
Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel," says the Lord, the LORD God Almighty. 13 "Hear this and testify against the house of Jacob," declares the Lord, the LORD God Almighty.
"On the very day I punish Israel for its sins, I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel. The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. 14 "On the day I punish Israel for her sins, I will destroy the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.
And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy -- their winter mansions and their summer houses, too -- all their palaces filled with ivory. I, the LORD, have spoken!" 15 I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed and the mansions will be demolished," declares the LORD.
