The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Keep and live out the entire commandment that I'm commanding you today so that you'll live and prosper and enter and own the land that God promised to your ancestors. 1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers.
Remember every road that God led you on for those forty years in the wilderness, pushing you to your limits, testing you so that he would know what you were made of, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
He put you through hard times. He made you go hungry. Then he fed you with manna, something neither you nor your parents knew anything about, so you would learn that men and women don't live by bread only; we live by every word that comes from God's mouth. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothes didn't wear out and your feet didn't blister those forty years. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.
You learned deep in your heart that God disciplines you in the same ways a father disciplines his child. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
So it's paramount that you keep the commandments of God, your God, walk down the roads he shows you and reverently respect him. 6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and revering him.
God is about to bring you into a good land, a land with brooks and rivers, springs and lakes, streams out of the hills and through the valleys. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills;
It's a land of wheat and barley, of vines and figs and pomegranates, of olives, oil, and honey. 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;
It's land where you'll never go hungry - always food on the table and a roof over your head. It's a land where you'll get iron out of rocks and mine copper from the hills. 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
After a meal, satisfied, bless God, your God, for the good land he has given you. 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Make sure you don't forget God, your God, by not keeping his commandments, his rules and regulations that I command you today 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.
Make sure that when you eat and are satisfied, build pleasant houses and settle in, 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,
see your herds and flocks flourish and more and more money come in, watch your standard of living going up and up - 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,
make sure you don't become so full of yourself and your things that you forget God, your God, the God who delivered you from Egyptian slavery; 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
the God who led you through that huge and fearsome wilderness, those desolate, arid badlands crawling with fiery snakes and scorpions; the God who gave you water gushing from hard rock; 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.
the God who gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never heard of, in order to give you a taste of the hard life, to test you so that you would be prepared to live well in the days ahead of you. 16 He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
If you start thinking to yourselves, "I did all this. And all by myself. I'm rich. It's all mine!" - 17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."
well, think again. Remember that God, your God, gave you the strength to produce all this wealth so as to confirm the covenant that he promised to your ancestors - as it is today. 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
If you forget, forget God, your God, and start taking up with other gods, serving and worshiping them, I'm on record right now as giving you firm warning: that will be the end of you; I mean it - destruction. 19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
You'll go to your doom - the same as the nations God is destroying before you; doom because you wouldn't obey the Voice of God, your God. 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
