You used to be dead because of your sins and acts of disobedience. 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
You walked in the ways of the 'olam hazeh and obeyed the Ruler of the Powers of the Air, who is still at work among the disobedient. 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
Indeed, we all once lived this way - we followed the passions of our old nature and obeyed the wishes of our old nature and our own thoughts. In our natural condition we were headed for God's wrath, just like everyone else. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
But God is so rich in mercy and loves us with such intense love 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
that, even when we were dead because of our acts of disobedience, he brought us to life along with the Messiah - it is by grace that you have been delivered. 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.
That is, God raised us up with the Messiah Yeshua and seated us with him in heaven, 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
in order to exhibit in the ages to come how infinitely rich is his grace, how great is his kindness toward us who are united with the Messiah Yeshua. 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For you have been delivered by grace through trusting, and even this is not your accomplishment but God's gift. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
You were not delivered by your own actions; therefore no one should boast. 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are of God's making, created in union with the Messiah Yeshua for a life of good actions already prepared by God for us to do. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Therefore, remember your former state: you Gentiles by birth - called the Uncircumcised by those who, merely because of an operation on their flesh, are called the Circumcised - 11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)--
at that time had no Messiah. You were estranged from the national life of Isra'el. You were foreigners to the covenants embodying God's promise. You were in this world without hope and without God. 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
But now, you who were once far off have been brought near through the shedding of the Messiah's blood. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
For he himself is our shalom - he has made us both one and has broken down the m'chitzah which divided us 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
by destroying in his own body the enmity occasioned by the Torah, with its commands set forth in the form of ordinances. He did this in order to create in union with himself from the two groups a single new humanity and thus make shalom, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
and in order to reconcile to God both in a single body by being executed on a stake as a criminal and thus in himself killing that enmity. 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
Also, when he came, he announced as Good News shalom to you far off and shalom to those nearby, b 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
news that through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers. On the contrary, you are fellow-citizens with God's people and members of God's family. 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,
You have been built on the foundation of the emissaries and the prophets, with the cornerstone being Yeshua the Messiah himself. 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
In union with him the whole building is held together, and it is growing into a holy temple in union with the Lord. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
Yes, in union with him, you yourselves are being built together into a spiritual dwelling-place for God! 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
