Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
And you, {although you were dead} in your trespasses and sins, 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will of the flesh and of the mind, and we were children of wrath by nature, as also the rest of [them] were. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love [with] which he loved us, 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
and we being dead in trespasses, he made [us] alive together with Christ (by grace you are saved), 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.
and raised [us] together and seated [us] together in the heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus, 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
in order that he might show in the coming ages the surpassing riches of his grace in kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you are saved through faith, and this [is] not from yourselves, [it is] the gift of God; 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
[it is] not from works, so that no one can boast. 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are his creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we may walk in them. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in [the] flesh, the so-called uncircumcision by the so-called circumcision in [the] flesh, made by hands, 11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)--
that you were at that time apart from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, not having hope, and without God in the world. 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you, the ones who once were far away, have become near by the blood of Christ. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
For he himself is our peace, who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of the partition, the enmity, in his flesh, 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
invalidating the law of commandments in ordinances, in order that he might create the two in himself into one new man, [thus] making peace, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
and might reconcile both in one body to God through the cross, killing the enmity in himself. 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
And coming, he proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to the ones who were near, 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
because through him [we] both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Consequently, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God, 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
in whom the whole building, joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
in whom you also are built up together into a dwelling place of God in [the] Spirit. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
