Bible in Basic English (BBE) New International Version (NIV)
Christ has truly made us free: then keep your free condition and let no man put a yoke on you again. 1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
See, I Paul say to you, that if you undergo circumcision, Christ will be of no use to you. 2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
Yes, I give witness again to every man who undergoes circumcision, that he will have to keep all the law. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
You are cut off from Christ, you who would have righteousness by the law; you are turned away from grace. 4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
For we through the Spirit by faith are waiting for the hope of righteousness. 5 But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.
Because in Christ Jesus, having circumcision or not having circumcision are equally of no profit; but only faith working through love. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
You were going on well; who was the cause of your not giving ear to what is true? 7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?
This ready belief did not come from him who had made you his. 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.
A little leaven makes a change in all the mass. 9 "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."
I am certain about you in the Lord, that you will be of no other mind; but he who is troubling you will have his punishment, whoever he is. 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be.
But I, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still attacked? then has the shame of the cross been taken away. 11 Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
My desire is that they who give you trouble might even be cut off themselves. 12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
Because you, brothers, were marked out to be free; only do not make use of your free condition to give the flesh its chance, but through love be servants one to another. 13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
For all the law is made complete in one word, even in this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. 14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
But if you are given to fighting with one another, take care that you are not the cause of destruction one to another. 15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
But I say, Go on in the Spirit, and you will not come under the rule of the evil desires of the flesh. 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; because these are opposite the one to the other; so that you may not do the things which you have a mind to do. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
Now the works of the flesh are clear, which are these: evil desire, unclean things, wrong use of the senses, 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
Worship of images, use of strange powers, hates, fighting, desire for what another has, angry feelings, attempts to get the better of others, divisions, false teachings, 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
Envy, uncontrolled drinking and feasting, and such things: of which I give you word clearly, even as I did in the past, that they who do such things will have no part in the kingdom of God. 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, a quiet mind, kind acts, well-doing, faith, 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gentle behaviour, control over desires: against such there is no law. 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
And those who are Christ's have put to death on the cross the flesh with its passions and its evil desires. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
If we are living by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us be guided. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Let us not be full of self-glory, making one another angry, having envy of one another. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
