New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Afterward the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, "Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great." 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
But Abram replied, "O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don't even have a son? Since I don't have a son, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
You have given me no children, so one of my servants will have to be my heir." 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."
Then the LORD said to him, "No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own to inherit everything I am giving you." 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."
Then the LORD brought Abram outside beneath the night sky and told him, "Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that -- too many to count!" 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD declared him righteous because of his faith. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Then the LORD told him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land." 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."
But Abram replied, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I be sure that you will give it to me?" 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"
Then the LORD told him, "Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."
Abram took all these and killed them. He cut each one down the middle and laid the halves side by side. He did not, however, divide the birds in half. 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
Some vultures came down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
That evening, as the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep. He saw a terrifying vision of darkness and horror. 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Then the LORD told Abram, "You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, and they will be oppressed as slaves for four hundred years. 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
(But you will die in peace, at a ripe old age.) 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, when the sin of the Amorites has run its course." 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
As the sun went down and it became dark, Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses. 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
So the LORD made a covenant with Abram that day and said, "I have given this land to your descendants, all the way from the border of Egypt to the great Euphrates River -- 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates--
the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites." 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
