King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children : and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar;
And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing : I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 2 so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.
And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived : and when she saw that she had conceived , her mistress was despised in her eyes. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived , I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee . And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. 6 "Your servant is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 7 The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.
And he said , Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou ? and whither wilt thou go ? And she said , I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. 8 And he said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. 9 Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her."
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly , that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 10 The angel added, "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count."
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. 11 The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said , Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 13 She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."
Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi ; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare , Ishmael. 15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
