Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am the Almighty God. Obey me and always do what is right. 1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.
I will make my covenant with you and give you many descendants." 2 I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers."
Abram bowed down with his face touching the ground, and God said, 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
"I make this covenant with you: I promise that you will be the ancestor of many nations. 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
Your name will no longer be Abram, but Abraham, because I am making you the ancestor of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
I will give you many descendants, and some of them will be kings. You will have so many descendants that they will become nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.
"I will keep my promise to you and to your descendants in future generations as an everlasting covenant. I will be your God and the God of your descendants. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
I will give to you and to your descendants this land in which you are now a foreigner. The whole land of Canaan will belong to your descendants forever, and I will be their God." 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God."
God said to Abraham, "You also must agree to keep the covenant with me, both you and your descendants in future generations. 9 Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.
You and your descendants must all agree to circumcise every male among you. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
From now on you must circumcise every baby boy when he is eight days old, including slaves born in your homes and slaves bought from foreigners. This will show that there is a covenant between you and me. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.
Each one must be circumcised, and this will be a physical sign to show that my covenant with you is everlasting. 13 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner--those who are not your offspring.
Any male who has not been circumcised will no longer be considered one of my people, because he has not kept the covenant with me." 14 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.
God said to Abraham, "You must no longer call your wife Sarai; from now on her name is Sarah. 15 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."
I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will become the mother of nations, and there will be kings among her descendants." 16 God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.
Abraham bowed down with his face touching the ground, but he began to laugh when he thought, "Can a man have a child when he is a hundred years old? Can Sarah have a child at ninety?" 17 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her."
He asked God, "Why not let Ishmael be my heir?" 18 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?"
But God said, "No. Your wife Sarah will bear you a son and you will name him Isaac. I will keep my covenant with him and with his descendants forever. It is an everlasting covenant. 19 And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!"
I have heard your request about Ishmael, so I will bless him and give him many children and many descendants. He will be the father of twelve princes, and I will make a great nation of his descendants. 20 Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
But I will keep my covenant with your son Isaac, who will be born to Sarah about this time next year." 21 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
When God finished speaking to Abraham, he left him. 22 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year."
On that same day Abraham obeyed God and circumcised his son Ishmael and all the other males in his household, including the slaves born in his home and those he had bought. 23 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, 24 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.
and his son Ishmael was thirteen. 25 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,
They were both circumcised on the same day, 26 and his son Ishmael was thirteen;
together with all of Abraham's slaves. 27 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that same day.
27 And every male in Abraham's household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.
