Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
And so the whole universe was completed. 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God finished what he had been doing and stopped working. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day, because by that day he had completed his creation and stopped working. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
And that is how the universe was created. When the Lord God made the universe, 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--
there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground,
but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground. 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground--
Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
A stream flowed in Eden and watered the garden; beyond Eden it divided into four rivers. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
The first river is the Pishon; it flows around the country of Havilah 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
(Pure gold is found there and also rare perfume and precious stones.) 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
The second river is the Gihon; it flows around the country of Cush. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
The third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria, and the fourth river is the Euphrates. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
Then the Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
He told him, "You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day." 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him." 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and that is how they all got their names. 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
So the man named all the birds and all the animals; but not one of them was a suitable companion to help him. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Then the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Then the man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind - Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. "Woman' is her name because she was taken out of man." 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man."
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one. 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
The man and the woman were both naked, but they were not embarrassed. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
