And it came to pass after these things, that God tempted Abraham, and said to him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, [here] I [am]. 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
And he said, Take now thy son, thy only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will name to thee. 2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and cleft the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose and went to the place which God had named to him. 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
And Abraham said to his young men, Abide you here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and return to you. 5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid [it] upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife: and they went both of them together. 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, here [am] I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where [is] the lamb for a burnt-offering? 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt-offering: so they went both of them together. 8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.
And they came to the place which God had named to him; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order; and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
And the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, Here [am] I. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing to him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld from me thy son, thy only [son]. 12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind [him] a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said [to] this day, In the mount of the LORD it will be seen. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven the second time, 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time
And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thy only [son]: 16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which [is] on the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed: because thou hast obeyed my voice. 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."
So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
And it came to pass after these things, that it was told to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also borne children to thy brother Nahor; 20 Some time later Abraham was told, "Milcah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:
Huz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel."
And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah bore to Nahor Abraham's brother. 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor.
And his concubine, whose name [was] Reumah, she bore also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maacah.
