Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
Yitzchak called Ya`akov, blessed him, and commanded him, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Kana`an. 1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman.
Arise, go to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Betu'el your mother's father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Lavan, your mother's brother. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
May El Shaddai bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples, 3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.
and give you the blessing of Avraham, to you, and to your seed with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Avraham." 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham."
Yitzchak sent Ya`akov away. He went to Paddan-Aram to Lavan, son of Betu'el the Arammian, Rivka's brother, Ya`akov's and Esav's mother. 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
Now Esav saw that Yitzchak had blessed Ya`akov and sent him away to Paddan-Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Kana`an," 6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman,"
and that Ya`akov obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-Aram. 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.
Esav saw that the daughters of Kana`an didn't please Yitzchak, his father. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;
Esav went to Yishma'el, and took, besides the wives that he had, Machalat the daughter of Yishma'el, Avraham's son, the sister of Nevayot, to be his wife. 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.
Ya`akov went out from Be'er-Sheva, and went toward Haran. 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.
He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
He dreamed. Behold, a stairway set up on the eretz, and the top of it reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
Behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Avraham your father, and the God of Yitzchak. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed. 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.
Your seed will be as the dust of the eretz, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your seed will all the families of the eretz be blessed. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you." 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
Ya`akov awakened out of his sleep, and he said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn't know it." 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
He was afraid, and said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other than God's house, and this is the gate of heaven." 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."
Ya`akov rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.
He called the name of that place Beit-El, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.
Ya`akov vowed a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on, 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear
so that I come again to my father's house in shalom, and the LORD will be my God, 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God
then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God's house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you." 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
