The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
And Man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have acquired a man with Jehovah. 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."
And she further bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd, but Cain was a husbandman. 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
And in process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to Jehovah. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat. And Jehovah looked upon Abel, and on his offering; 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
and upon Cain, and on his offering, he did not look. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
And Jehovah said to Cain, Why art thou angry, and why is thy countenance fallen? 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
If thou doest well, will not [thy countenance] look up [with confidence]? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
And Cain spoke to Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
And Jehovah said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper? 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
And now be thou cursed from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield thee its strength; a wanderer and fugitive shalt thou be on the earth. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
And Cain said to Jehovah, My punishment is too great to be borne. 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.
Behold, thou hast driven me this day from the face of the ground, and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a wanderer and fugitive on the earth; and it will come to pass, [that] every one who finds me will slay me. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
And Jehovah said to him, Therefore, whoever slayeth Cain, it shall be revenged sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark on Cain, lest any finding him should smite him. 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, toward the east of Eden. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city; and he called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch. 17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lemech. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
And Lemech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the second, Zillah. 19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
And Adah bore Jabal: he was the father of those who dwell in tents, and [breed] cattle. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of those who handle the harp and pipe. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
And Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, the forger of every kind of tool of brass and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
And Lemech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice, Ye wives of Lemech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for my wound, and a youth for my bruise. 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
If Cain shall be avenged seven-fold; Lemech seventy and seven fold. 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: ... For God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, because Cain has slain him. 25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
And to Seth, to him also was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of Jehovah. 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.
