| 1 [Set] the trumpet to thy mouth. As an eagle [he cometh] against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. | 1 "Put the trumpet to your lips! An eagle is over the house of the LORD because the people have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law. |
| 2 They shall cry unto me, My God, we Israel know thee. | 2 Israel cries out to me, 'O our God, we acknowledge you!' |
| 3 Israel hath cast off that which is good: the enemy shall pursue him. | 3 But Israel has rejected what is good; an enemy will pursue him. |
| 4 They have set up kings, but not by me; they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off. | 4 They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction. |
| 5 He hath cast off thy calf, O Samaria; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency? | 5 Throw out your calf-idol, O Samaria! My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity? |
| 6 For from Israel is even this; the workman made it, and it is no God; yea, the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces. | 6 They are from Israel! This calf--a craftsman has made it; it is not God. It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria. |
| 7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: he hath no standing grain; the blade shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up. | 7 "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up. |
| 8 Israel is swallowed up: now are they among the nations as a vessel wherein none delighteth. | 8 Israel is swallowed up; now she is among the nations like a worthless thing. |
| 9 For they are gone up to Assyria, [like] a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers. | 9 For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey wandering alone. Ephraim has sold herself to lovers. |
| 10 Yea, though they hire among the nations, now will I gather them; and they begin to be diminished by reason of the burden of the king of princes. | 10 Although they have sold themselves among the nations, I will now gather them together. They will begin to waste away under the oppression of the mighty king. |
| 11 Because Ephraim hath multiplied altars for sinning, altars have been unto him for sinning. | 11 "Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning. |
| 12 I wrote for him the ten thousand things of my law; but they are counted as a strange thing. | 12 I wrote for them the many things of my law, but they regarded them as something alien. |
| 13 As for the sacrifices of mine offerings, they sacrifice flesh and eat it; but Jehovah accepteth them not: now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins; they shall return to Egypt. | 13 They offer sacrifices given to me and they eat the meat, but the LORD is not pleased with them. Now he will remember their wickedness and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt. |
| 14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and builded palaces; and Judah hath multiplied fortified cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the castles thereof. | 14 Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has fortified many towns. But I will send fire upon their cities that will consume their fortresses." |
