New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
These visions concerning Judah and Jerusalem came to Isaiah son of Amoz during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah -- all kings of Judah. 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! This is what the LORD says: "The children I raised and cared for have turned against me. 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
Even the animals -- the donkey and the ox -- know their owner and appreciate his care, but not my people Israel. No matter what I do for them, they still do not understand." 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."
Oh, what a sinful nation they are! They are loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil and corrupt children who have turned away from the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel, cutting themselves off from his help. 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick. 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.
You are sick from head to foot -- covered with bruises, welts, and infected wounds -- without any ointments or bandages. 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.
Your country lies in ruins, and your cities are burned. As you watch, foreigners plunder your fields and destroy everything they see. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
Jerusalem stands abandoned like a watchman's shelter in a vineyard or field after the harvest is over. It is as helpless as a city under siege. 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
If the LORD Almighty had not spared a few of us, we would have been wiped out as completely as Sodom and Gomorrah. 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.
Listen to the LORD, you leaders of Israel! Listen to the law of our God, people of Israel. You act just like the rulers and people of Sodom and Gomorrah. 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
"I am sick of your sacrifices," says the LORD. "Don't bring me any more burnt offerings! I don't want the fat from your rams or other animals. I don't want to see the blood from your offerings of bulls and rams and goats. 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
Why do you keep parading through my courts with your worthless sacrifices? 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
The incense you bring me is a stench in my nostrils! Your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath day, and your special days for fasting -- even your most pious meetings -- are all sinful and false. I want nothing more to do with them. 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
I hate all your festivals and sacrifices. I cannot stand the sight of them! 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
From now on, when you lift up your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen. For your hands are covered with the blood of your innocent victims. 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood;
Wash yourselves and be clean! Let me no longer see your evil deeds. Give up your wicked ways. 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong,
Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the orphan. Fight for the rights of widows. 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
"Come now, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool. 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
If you will only obey me and let me help you, then you will have plenty to eat. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land;
But if you keep turning away and refusing to listen, you will be destroyed by your enemies. I, the LORD, have spoken!" 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
See how Jerusalem, once so faithful, has become a prostitute. Once the home of justice and righteousness, she is now filled with murderers. 21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!
Once like pure silver, you have become like worthless slag. Once so pure, you are now like watered-down wine. 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your leaders are rebels, the companions of thieves. All of them take bribes and refuse to defend the orphans and the widows. 23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, says, "I will pour out my fury on you, my enemies! 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.
I will turn against you. I will melt you down and skim off your slag. I will remove all your impurities. 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.
Afterward I will give you good judges and wise counselors like the ones you used to have. Then Jerusalem will again be called the Home of Justice and the Faithful City." 26 I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City."
Because the LORD is just and righteous, the repentant people of Jerusalem will be redeemed. 27 Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness.
But all sinners will be completely destroyed, for they refuse to come to the LORD. 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish.
Shame will cover you when you think of the times you offered sacrifices to idols in your groves of sacred oaks. You will blush when you think of all the sins you committed in your sacred gardens. 29 "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen.
You will wither away like an oak or garden without water. 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water.
The strongest among you will disappear like burning straw. Your evil deeds are the spark that will set the straw on fire, and no one will be able to put it out. 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire."
