1 Y respondió Zofar naamatita, y dijo:

Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
2 Por cierto mis pensamientos me hacen responder, y por tanto me apresuro.

“My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer because I am greatly disturbed.
3 La reprensión de mi censura he oído, y me hace responder el espíritu de mi inteligencia.

I hear a rebuke that dishonors me, and my understanding inspires me to reply.
4 ¿No sabes esto que fue siempre, desde el tiempo que fue puesto el hombre sobre la tierra,

“Surely you know how it has been from of old, ever since mankind was placed on the earth,
5 que la alegría de los impíos <I>es</I> breve, y el gozo del hipócrita por un momento?
5
that the mirth of the wicked is brief, the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.
6 Si subiere su altura hasta el cielo, y su cabeza tocare en las nubes,

Though the pride of the godless person reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds,
7 con su <I>mismo</I> estiércol perecerá para siempre; los que le hubieren visto, dirán: ¿Qué es de él?

he will perish forever, like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
8 Como sueño volará, y no será hallado; y se disipará como visión nocturna.

Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found, banished like a vision of the night.
9 El ojo que le habrá visto, nunca más le vera; ni su lugar le echará más de ver.

The eye that saw him will not see him again; his place will look on him no more.
10 Sus hijos pobres andarán rogando; y sus manos devolverán lo que él robó.

His children must make amends to the poor; his own hands must give back his wealth.
11 Sus huesos están llenos de <I>los pecados de</I> su juventud, y con él serán sepultados en el polvo.

The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.
12 Si el mal se endulzó en su boca, si lo ocultaba debajo de su lengua;

“Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he hides it under his tongue,
13 si le parecía bien, y no lo dejaba, sino que lo detenía entre su paladar;
13
though he cannot bear to let it go and lets it linger in his mouth,
14 su comida se mudará en sus entrañas, hiel de áspides <I>será</I> dentro de él.

yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him.
15 Comió haciendas, mas las vomitará; de su vientre las sacará Dios.

He will spit out the riches he swallowed; God will make his stomach vomit them up.
16 Veneno de áspides chupará; lo matará lengua de víbora.
16
He will suck the poison of serpents; the fangs of an adder will kill him.
17 No verá los arroyos, las riberas de los ríos de miel y de manteca.

He will not enjoy the streams, the rivers flowing with honey and cream.
18 Restituirá el trabajo <I>ajeno</I> conforme a la hacienda que tomó; y no tragará, ni gozará.

What he toiled for he must give back uneaten; he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.
19 Por cuanto quebrantó y desamparó a los pobres, robó casas, y no las edificó;

For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute; he has seized houses he did not build.
20 por tanto, no sentirá él sosiego en su vientre, ni escapará con su codicia.

“Surely he will have no respite from his craving; he cannot save himself by his treasure.
21 No quedó nada que no comiese; por tanto su bien no será durable.
21
Nothing is left for him to devour; his prosperity will not endure.
22 Cuando fuere lleno su bastimento, tendrá angustia; las manos todas de los malvados vendrán sobre él.
22
In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him; the full force of misery will come upon him.
23 Cuando se pusiere a llenar su vientre, Dios enviará sobre él el furor de su ira, y <I>la</I> hará llover sobre él y sobre su comida.

When he has filled his belly, God will vent his burning anger against him and rain down his blows on him.
24 Huirá de las armas de hierro, y el arco de acero le atravesará.

Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.
25 Desenvainará y sacará <I>saeta</I> de su aljaba, y relumbrante pasará por su hiel; sobre él vendrán terrores.

He pulls it out of his back, the gleaming point out of his liver. Terrors will come over him;
26 Todas tinieblas están guardadas para sus secretos; fuego no soplado lo devorará; su sucesor será quebrantado en su tienda.

total darkness lies in wait for his treasures. A fire unfanned will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.
27 Los cielos descubrirán su iniquidad, y la tierra se levantará contra él.

The heavens will expose his guilt; the earth will rise up against him.
28 Los renuevos de su casa serán trasportados; serán derramados en el día de su furor.

A flood will carry off his house, rushing waters on the day of God’s wrath.
29 Esta <I>es</I> la parte que Dios apareja al hombre impío, y la heredad que Dios le señala por su palabra.

Such is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God.”
