These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
of sin, because they believe not on me; 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, [these] shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me. 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
[Some] of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith. 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
