Bible in Basic English (BBE) New International Version (NIV)
I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going? 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged: 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
Of sin, because they have not faith in me; 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me. 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father? 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us. 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you, 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus made answer, Have you faith now? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
