Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
"I have said these [things] to you so that you will not fall away. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
{They will expel you from the synagogue}, but an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think they are offering service to God. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
And they will do these [things] because they do not know the Father or me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But I have said these [things] to you so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you about them. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you is asking me, 'Where are you going?' 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have said these [things] to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And [when he] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment: 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
concerning sin, because they do not believe in me, 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
and concerning righteousness, because I am going away to the Father and you will see me no more, 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
I still have many [things] to say to you, but you are not able to bear [them] now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
But when he--the Spirit of truth--comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will proclaim to you the things to come. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take from what [is] mine and will proclaim [it] to you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine. For this [reason] I said that he takes from what [is] mine and will proclaim [it] to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
"A little [while] and you will see me no more, and again a little [while] and you will see me. 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he is saying to us, 'A little [while] and you will not see me, and again a little [while] and you will see me,' and 'Because I am going away to the Father'?" 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
So they kept on saying, "What is this that he is saying, 'A little [while]'? We do not understand what he is speaking about!" 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus knew that they were wanting to ask him, and he said to them, "Are you deliberating with one another about this--that I said, 'A little [while], and you will not see me, and again a little [while] and you will see me'? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Truly, truly I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will change to joy. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
A woman, when she gives birth, experiences pain because her hour has come. But when [her] child is born, she no longer remembers the affliction, on account of the joy that a human being has been born into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
So you also are experiencing sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
And on that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
"I have said these [things] to you in figurative sayings. An hour is coming when I will speak to you in figurative sayings no longer, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I have gone out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
His disciples said, "Behold, now you are speaking {plainly} and are telling [us] no figurative saying! 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we know that you know everything and do not {need for} anyone to ask you [questions]. By this we believe that you have come from God." 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus replied to them, "Now do you believe? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
Behold, an hour is coming--and has come--that you will be scattered each one to his own [home], and you will leave me alone. And I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have said these [things] to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction, but have courage! I have conquered the world." 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
