New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"I have told you these things so that you won't fall away. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing God a service. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
This is because they have never known the Father or me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
Yes, I'm telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember I warned you. I didn't tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
"But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you has asked me where I am going. 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
Instead, you are very sad. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Counselor won't come. If I do go away, he will come because I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
The world's sin is unbelief in me. 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
Judgment will come because the prince of this world has already been judged. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
"Oh, there is so much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
"In just a little while I will be gone, and you won't see me anymore. Then, just a little while after that, you will see me again." 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
The disciples asked each other, "What does he mean when he says, 'You won't see me, and then you will see me'? And what does he mean when he says, 'I am going to the Father'? 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
And what does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand." 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus realized they wanted to ask him, so he said, "Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in just a little while I will be gone, and you won't see me anymore. Then, just a little while after that, you will see me again. 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Truly, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy when you see me again. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
It will be like a woman experiencing the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives place to joy because she has brought a new person into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
You have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. The truth is, you can go directly to the Father and ask him, and he will grant your request because you use my name. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
"I have spoken of these matters in parables, but the time will come when this will not be necessary, and I will tell you plainly all about the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and I will leave the world and return to the Father." 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
Then his disciples said, "At last you are speaking plainly and not in parables. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we understand that you know everything and don't need anyone to tell you anything. From this we believe that you came from God." 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus asked, "Do you finally believe? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
But the time is coming -- in fact, it is already here -- when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
