"I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, "Where are you going?' 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
about sin, because they do not believe in me; 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
"A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me." 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying to us, "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and "Because I am going to the Father'?" 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
They said, "What does he mean by this "a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
"I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
His disciples said, "Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God." 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!" 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
