Douay-Rheims (RHE) New International Version (NIV)
These things have I spoken to you things have I spoken to you that you may not be scandalized. 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doth a service to God. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father nor me. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou? 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go. For if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you: but if I go, I will send him to you. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin and of justice and of judgment. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
Of sin: because they believed not in me. 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
And of justice: because I go to the Father: and you shall see me no longer. 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged. 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself: but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak. And the things that are to come, he shall shew you. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He shall glorify me: because he shall receive of mine and shall shew it to you. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine. Therefore I said that he shall receive of me and shew it to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
A little while, and now you shall not see me: and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father. 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
Then some of his disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me: and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, Because I go to the Father? 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"
They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he speaketh. 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him. And he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me? 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
So also you now indeed have sorrow: but I will see you again and your heart shall rejoice. And your joy no man shall take from you. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen, I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
Hitherto, you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.
In that day, you shall ask in my name: and I say not to you that I will ask the Father for you. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came out from God. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came forth from the Father and am come into the world: again I leave the world and I go to the Father. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly and speakest no proverb. 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.
Now we know that thou knowest all things and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
Jesus answered them: Do you now believe? 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
Behold, the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own and shall leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress. But have confidence. I have overcome the world. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
