Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) New International Version (NIV)
After this, there was a Judean festival; and Yeshua went up to Yerushalayim. 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.
In Yerushalayim, by the Sheep Gate, is a pool called in Aramaic, Beit-Zata, 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
in which lay a crowd of invalids -- blind, lame, crippled. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
Some manuscripts have verses 3b4: . . . , waiting for the water to move; v4 for at certain times an angel of ADONAI went down into the pool and disturbed the water, and whoever stepped into the water first after it was disturbed was healed of whatever disease he had. 4 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 5 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
Yeshua, seeing this man and knowing that he had been there a long time, said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 6 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
The sick man answered, "I have no one to put me in the pool when the water is disturbed; and while I'm trying to get there, someone goes in ahead of me." 7 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
Yeshua said to him, "Get up, pick up your mat and walk!" 8 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
Immediately the man was healed, and he picked up his mat and walked. Now that day was Shabbat, 9 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
so the Judeans said to the man who had been healed, "It's Shabbat! It's against Torah for you to carry your mat!" 10 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' "
But he answered them, "The man who healed me -- he's the one who told me, `Pick up your mat and walk.'" 11 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?"
They asked him, "Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?" 12 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
But the man who had been healed didn't know who it was, because Yeshua had slipped away into the crowd. 13 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."
Afterwards Yeshua found him in the Temple court and said to him, "See, you are well! Now stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you!" 14 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The man went off and told the Judeans it was Yeshua who had healed him; 15 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.
and on account of this, the Judeans began harassing Yeshua because he did these things on Shabbat. 16 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."
But he answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I too am working." 17 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
This answer made the Judeans all the more intent on killing him -- not only was he breaking Shabbat; but also, by saying that God was his own Father, he was claiming equality with God. 18 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
Therefore, Yeshua said this to them: "Yes, indeed! I tell you that the Son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does, the Son does too. 19 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does; and he will show him even greater things than these, so that you will be amazed. 20 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
Just as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, so too the Son makes alive anyone he wants. 21 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
The Father does not judge anyone but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 22 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
so that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever fails to honor the Son is not honoring the Father who sent him. 23 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever hears what I am saying and trusts the One who sent me has eternal life -- that is, he will not come up for judgment but has already crossed over from death to life! 24 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
Yes, indeed! I tell you that there is coming a time -- in fact, it's already here -- when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who listen will come to life. 25 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has given the Son life to have in himself. 26 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
Also he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 27 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
Don't be surprised at this; because the time is coming when all who are in the grave will hear his voice 28 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
and come out -- those who have done good to a resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to a resurrection of judgment. 29 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
I can't do a thing on my own. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is right; because I don't seek my own desire, but the desire of the one who sent me. 30 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.
"If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not valid. 31 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.
But there is someone else testifying on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he is making is valid -- 32 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.
you have sent to Yochanan, and he has testified to the truth. 33 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.
Not that I collect human testimony; rather, I say these things so that you might be saved. 34 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
He was a lamp burning and shining, and for a little while you were willing to bask in his light. 35 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.
"But I have a testimony that is greater than Yochanan's. For the things the Father has given me to do, the very things I am doing now, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. 36 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
"In addition, the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice or seen his shape; 37 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
moreover, his word does not stay in you, because you don't trust the one he sent. 38 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
You keep examining the Tanakh because you think that in it you have eternal life. Those very Scriptures bear witness to me, 39 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
but you won't come to me in order to have life! 40 "I do not accept praise from men,
"I don't collect praise from men, 41 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
but I do know you people -- I know that you have no love for God in you! 42 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
I have come in my Father's name, and you don't accept me; if someone else comes in his own name, him you will accept. 43 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ?
How can you trust? You're busy collecting praise from each other, instead of seeking praise from God only. 44 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
"But don't think that it is I who will be your accuser before the Father. Do you know who will accuse you? Moshe, the very one you have counted on! 45 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
For if you really believed Moshe, you would believe me; because it was about me that he wrote. 46 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
But if you don't believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?" 47
