After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters; 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] 4 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 5 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, "Do you wish to get well?" 6 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me." 7 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet and walk." 8 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 9 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet." 10 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' "
But he answered them, "He who made me well was the one who said to me, 'Pick up your pallet and walk.'" 11 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?"
They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Pick up your pallet and walk '?" 12 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 13 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you." 14 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 15 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.
For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 16 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."
But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working." 17 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. 18 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 19 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
"For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 20 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
"For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 21 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
"For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 22 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 23 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 24 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 25 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
"For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 26 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 27 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 28 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. 29 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
"I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 30 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.
"If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 31 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.
"There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. 32 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.
"You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 33 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.
"But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 34 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
"He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 35 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.
"But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish -the very works that I do -testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. 36 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
"And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 37 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
"You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 38 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 39 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 40 "I do not accept praise from men,
"I do not receive glory from men; 41 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 42 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
"I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 43 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ?
"How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? 44 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
"Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 45 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
"For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. 46 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
"But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" 47
