Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Beth-za'tha, which has five porticoes. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.
* [No text] 4 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 5 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 6 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." 7 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." 8 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath. 9 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." 10 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' "
But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.'" 11 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?"
They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" 12 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 13 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."
Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." 14 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 15 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.
And this was why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this on the sabbath. 16 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working still, and I am working." 17 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God. 18 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise. 19 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.
For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all that he himself is doing; and greater works than these will he show him, that you may marvel. 20 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.
For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 21 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 22 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 23 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 24 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 25 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, 26 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. 27 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 28 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. 29 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
"I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 30 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.
If I bear witness to myself, my testimony is not true; 31 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.
there is another who bears witness to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is true. 32 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.
You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 33 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.
Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved. 34 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 35 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.
But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me. 36 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness to me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen; 37 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.
and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent. 38 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me; 39 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 40 "I do not accept praise from men,
I do not receive glory from men. 41 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
But I know that you have not the love of God within you. 42 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 43 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ?
How can you believe, who receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 44 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; it is Moses who accuses you, on whom you set your hope. 45 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. 46 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?" 47
