American Standard Version (ASV) New International Version (NIV)
Then Jonah prayed unto Jehovah his God out of the fish's belly. 1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, [And] thou heardest my voice. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy billows passed over me. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; The deep was round about me; The weeds were wrapped about my head. 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The earth with its bars [closed] upon me for ever: Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.
When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
They that regard lying vanities Forsake their own mercy. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah. 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
And Jehovah spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
