Hebrew Names Version (HNV) New International Version (NIV)
Then Yonah prayed to the LORD, his God, out of the fish's belly. 1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
He said, "I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of She'ol I cried. You heard my voice. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
For you threw me into the depths, In the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; Yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
The waters surrounded me, Even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head. 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The eretz barred me in forever: Yet have you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.
"When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to the LORD." 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
The LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Yonah on the dry land. 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
