Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, 1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
saying, "I called to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
For thou didst cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
Then I said, 'I am cast out from thy presence; how shall I again look upon thy holy temple?' 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
The waters closed in over me, the deep was round about me; weeds were wrapped about my head 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet thou didst bring up my life from the Pit, O LORD my God. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.
When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the LORD!" 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."
And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
