World English Bible (WEB) New International Version (NIV)
After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he lived in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. 1 After the time of Abimelech a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
He judged Israel twenty-three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir. 2 He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
After him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty-two years. 3 He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years.
He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkey colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. 4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.
Jair died, and was buried in Kamon. 5 When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and served the Baals, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Yahweh, and didn't serve him. 6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him,
The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon. 7 he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
They vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years [oppressed they] all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 8 who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.
The children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed. 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was in great distress.
The children of Israel cried to Yahweh, saying, We have sinned against you, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baals. 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."
Yahweh said to the children of Israel, Didn't I save you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? 11 The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and you cried to me, and I saved you out of their hand. 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods: therefore I will save you no more. 13 But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!"
The children of Israel said to Yahweh, We have sinned: do you to us whatever seems good to you; only deliver us, we pray you, this day. 15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now."
They put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Yahweh; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer.
Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. The children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah. 17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
The people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he who will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head of all those living in Gilead."
