New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
I am the one who has seen the afflictions that come from the rod of the LORD's anger. 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
He has brought me into deep darkness, shutting out all light. 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light;
He has turned against me. Day and night his hand is heavy upon me. 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long.
He has made my skin and flesh grow old. He has broken my bones. 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones.
He has attacked me and surrounded me with anguish and distress. 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
He has buried me in a dark place, like a person long dead. 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead.
He has walled me in, and I cannot escape. He has bound me in heavy chains. 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains.
And though I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayers. 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer.
He has blocked my path with a high stone wall. He has twisted the road before me with many detours. 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked.
He hid like a bear or a lion, waiting to attack me. 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding,
He dragged me off the path and tore me with his claws, leaving me helpless and desolate. 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help.
He bent his bow and aimed it squarely at me. 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows.
He shot his arrows deep into my heart. 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver.
My own people laugh at me. All day long they sing their mocking songs. 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long.
He has filled me with bitterness. He has given me a cup of deep sorrow to drink. 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall.
He has made me grind my teeth on gravel. He has rolled me in the dust. 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust.
Peace has been stripped away, and I have forgotten what prosperity is. 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.
I cry out, "My splendor is gone! Everything I had hoped for from the LORD is lost!" 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD."
The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.
I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.
Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
The unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!" 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."
The LORD is wonderfully good to those who wait for him and seek him. 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;
So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD. 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
And it is good for the young to submit to the yoke of his discipline. 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.
Let them sit alone in silence beneath the LORD's demands. 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him.
Let them lie face down in the dust; then at last there is hope for them. 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope.
Let them turn the other cheek to those who strike them. Let them accept the insults of their enemies. 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.
For the Lord does not abandon anyone forever. 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever.
Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion according to the greatness of his unfailing love. 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.
For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow. 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.
But the leaders of his people trampled prisoners underfoot. 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land,
They deprived people of their God-given rights in defiance of the Most High. 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High,
They perverted justice in the courts. Do they think the Lord didn't see it? 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things?
Can anything happen without the Lord's permission? 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?
Is it not the Most High who helps one and harms another? 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?
Then why should we, mere humans, complain when we are punished for our sins? 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins?
Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn again in repentance to the LORD. 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.
Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven and say, 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say:
"We have sinned and rebelled, and you have not forgiven us." 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven.
"You have engulfed us with your anger, chased us down, and slaughtered us without mercy. 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity.
You have hidden yourself in a cloud so our prayers cannot reach you. 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through.
You have discarded us as refuse and garbage among the nations." 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.
"All our enemies have spoken out against us. 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us.
We are filled with fear, for we are trapped, desolate, and ruined." 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction."
Streams of tears flow from my eyes because of the destruction of my people! 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed.
My tears flow down endlessly. They will not stop 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief,
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
My heart is breaking over the fate of all the women of Jerusalem. 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city.
My enemies, whom I have never harmed, chased me like a bird. 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird.
They threw me into a pit and dropped stones on me. 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me;
The water flowed above my head, and I cried out, "This is the end!" 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off.
But I called on your name, LORD, from deep within the well, 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit.
and you heard me! You listened to my pleading; you heard my weeping! 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief."
Yes, you came at my despairing cry and told me, "Do not fear." 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear."
Lord, you are my lawyer! Plead my case! For you have redeemed my life. 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life.
You have seen the wrong they have done to me, LORD. Be my judge, and prove me right. 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause!
You have seen the plots my enemies have laid against me. 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me.
LORD, you have heard the vile names they call me. You know all about the plans they have made -- 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me--
the plots my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long.
Look at them! In all their activities, they constantly mock me with their songs. 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs.
Pay them back, LORD, for all the evil they have done. 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done.
Give them hard and stubborn hearts, and then let your curse fall upon them! 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them!
Chase them down in your anger, destroying them from beneath the LORD's heavens. 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
