Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
The Lord commanded Moses to tell the Aaronite priests, "No priest is to make himself ritually unclean by taking part in the funeral ceremonies when a relative dies, 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: 'A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die,
unless it is his mother, father, son, daughter, brother, 2 except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother,
or unmarried sister living in his house. 3 or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband--for her he may make himself unclean.
He shall not make himself unclean at the death of those related to him by marriage. 4 He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage, and so defile himself.
"No priest shall shave any part of his head or trim his beard or cut gashes on his body to show that he is in mourning. 5 " 'Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies.
He must be holy and must not disgrace my name. He offers food offerings to me, and he must be holy. 6 They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the offerings made to the LORD by fire, the food of their God, they are to be holy.
A priest shall not marry a woman who has been a prostitute or a woman who is not a virgin or who is divorced; he is holy. 7 " 'They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God.
The people must consider the priest holy, because he presents the food offerings to me. I am the Lord; I am holy and I make my people holy. 8 Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the LORD am holy--I who make you holy.
If a priest's daughter becomes a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she shall be burned to death. 9 " 'If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.
"The High Priest has had the anointing oil poured on his head and has been consecrated to wear the priestly garments, so he must not leave his hair uncombed or tear his clothes to show that he is in mourning. 10 " 'The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes.
He has been dedicated to me and is not to make himself ritually unclean nor is he to defile my sacred Tent by leaving it and entering a house where there is a dead person, even if it is his own father or mother. 11 He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother,
He shall marry a virgin, 13 nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD.
not a widow or a divorced woman or a woman who has been a prostitute. He shall marry only a virgin from his own clan. 14 " 'The woman he marries must be a virgin.
Otherwise, his children, who ought to be holy, will be ritually unclean. I am the Lord and I have set him apart as the High Priest." 15 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people,
The Lord commanded Moses 16 so he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the LORD, who makes him holy. ' "
to tell Aaron, "None of your descendants who has any physical defects may present the food offering to me. This applies for all time to come. 17 The LORD said to Moses,
No man with any physical defects may make the offering: no one who is blind, lame, disfigured, or deformed; 18 "Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God.
no one with a crippled hand or foot; 19 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed;
no one who is a hunchback or a dwarf; no one with any eye or skin disease; and no eunuch. 20 no man with a crippled foot or hand,
No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any physical defects may present the food offering to me. 21 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles.
Such a man may eat the food offered to me, both the holy food offering and the very holy food offering, 22 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God.
but because he has a physical defect, he shall not come near the sacred curtain or approach the altar. He must not profane these holy things, because I am the Lord and I make them holy." 23 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food;
This, then, is what Moses said to Aaron, the sons of Aaron, and to all the people of Israel. 24 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.' "
24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.
