Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
Jesus looked around and saw rich people dropping their gifts in the Temple treasury, 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
and he also saw a very poor widow dropping in two little copper coins. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
He said, "I tell you that this poor widow put in more than all the others. 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
For the others offered their gifts from what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, gave all she had to live on." 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
Some of the disciples were talking about the Temple, how beautiful it looked with its fine stones and the gifts offered to God. Jesus said, 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,
"All this you see - the time will come when not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one will be thrown down." 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
"Teacher," they asked, "when will this be? And what will happen in order to show that the time has come for it to take place?" 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"
Jesus said, "Watch out; don't be fooled. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, "I am he!' and, "The time has come!' But don't follow them. 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.
Don't be afraid when you hear of wars and revolutions; such things must happen first, but they do not mean that the end is near." 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away."
He went on to say, "Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be terrible earthquakes, famines, and plagues everywhere; there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake. 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.
This will be your chance to tell the Good News. 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them.
Make up your minds ahead of time not to worry about how you will defend yourselves, 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.
because I will give you such words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to refute or contradict what you say. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
You will be handed over by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends; and some of you will be put to death. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
Everyone will hate you because of me. 17 All men will hate you because of me.
But not a single hair from your heads will be lost. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.
Stand firm, and you will save yourselves. 19 By standing firm you will gain life.
"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that it will soon be destroyed. 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.
Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills; those who are in the city must leave, and those who are out in the country must not go into the city. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.
For those will be "The Days of Punishment,' to make come true all that the Scriptures say. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! Terrible distress will come upon this land, and God's punishment will fall on this people. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
Some will be killed by the sword, and others will be taken as prisoners to all countries; and the heathen will trample over Jerusalem until their time is up. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
"There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides. 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near." 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
Then Jesus told them this parable: "Think of the fig tree and all the other trees. 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
When you see their leaves beginning to appear, you know that summer is near. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that the Kingdom of God is about to come. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
"Remember that all these things will take place before the people now living have all died. 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"Be careful not to let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch you 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap.
like a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth. 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
Be on watch and pray always that you will have the strength to go safely through all those things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man." 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."
