| The Darby Translation (DBY) | New International Version (NIV) |
| 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which [is] called the passover, drew nigh, | 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, |
| 2 and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. | 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. |
| 3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariote, being of the number of the twelve. | 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. |
| 4 And he went away and spoke with the chief priests and captains as to how he should deliver him up to them. | 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. |
| 5 And they were rejoiced, and agreed to give him money. | 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. |
| 6 And he came to an agreement to do it, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them away from the crowd. | 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. |
| 7 And the day of unleavened bread came, in which the passover was to be killed. | 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
| 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat [it]. | 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." |
| 9 But they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare [it]? | 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. |
| 10 And he said to them, Behold, as ye enter into the city a man will meet you, carrying an earthen pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he goes in; | 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, |
| 11 and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher says to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples? | 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' |
| 12 And *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. | 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." |
| 13 And having gone they found it as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover. | 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. |
| 14 And when the hour was come, he placed himself at table, and the [twelve] apostles with him. | 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. |
| 15 And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. | 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
| 16 For I say unto you, that I will not eat any more at all of it until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. | 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." |
| 17 And having received a cup, when he had given thanks he said, Take this and divide it among yourselves. | 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. |
| 18 For I say unto you, that I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God come. | 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
| 19 And having taken a loaf, when he had given thanks, he broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. | 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." |
| 20 In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. | 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. |
| 21 Moreover, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up [is] with me on the table; | 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. |
| 22 and the Son of man indeed goes as it is determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is delivered up. | 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." |
| 23 And *they* began to question together among themselves who then it could be of them who was about to do this. | 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. |
| 24 And there was also a strife among them which of them should be held to be [the] greatest. | 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. |
| 25 And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors. | 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. |
| 26 But *ye* [shall] not [be] thus; but let the greater among you be as the younger, and the leader as he that serves. | 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. |
| 27 For which [is] greater, he that is at table or he that serves? [Is] not he that is at table? But *I* am in the midst of you as the one that serves. | 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. |
| 28 But *ye* are they who have persevered with me in my temptations. | 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. |
| 29 And *I* appoint unto you, as my Father has appointed unto me, a kingdom, | 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, |
| 30 that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
| 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, to sift [you] as wheat; | 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. |
| 32 but *I* have besought for thee that thy faith fail not; and *thou*, when once thou hast been restored, confirm thy brethren. | 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." |
| 33 And he said to him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death. | 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." |
| 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, [the] cock shall not crow to-day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. | 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." |
| 35 And he said to them, When I sent you without purse and scrip and sandals, did ye lack anything? And they said, Nothing. | 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. |
| 36 He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword; | 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. |
| 37 for I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned with [the] lawless: for also the things concerning me have an end. | 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." |
| 38 And they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. | 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. |
| 39 And going forth he went according to his custom to the mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. | 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. |
| 40 And when he was at the place he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. | 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." |
| 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and having knelt down he prayed, | 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, |
| 42 saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: -- but then, not my will, but thine be done. | 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." |
| 43 And an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him. | 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. |
| 44 And being in conflict he prayed more intently. And his sweat became as great drops of blood, falling down upon the earth. | 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
| 45 And rising up from his prayer, coming to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. | 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. |
| 46 And he said to them, Why sleep ye? rise up and pray that ye enter not into temptation. | 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." |
| 47 As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. | 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, |
| 48 And Jesus said to him, Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of man with a kiss? | 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
| 49 And they who were around him, seeing what was going to follow, said [to him], Lord, shall we smite with [the] sword? | 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" |
| 50 And a certain one from among them smote the bondman of the high priest and took off his right ear. | 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. |
| 51 And Jesus answering said, Suffer thus far; and having touched his ear, he healed him. | 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. |
| 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, who were come against him, Have ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks? | 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? |
| 53 When I was day by day with you in the temple ye did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness. | 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." |
| 54 And having laid hold on him, they led him [away], and they led [him] into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off. | 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. |
| 55 And they having lit a fire in the midst of the court and sat down together, Peter sat among them. | 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. |
| 56 And a certain maid, having seen him sitting by the light, and having fixed her eyes upon him, said, And this [man] was with him. | 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." |
| 57 But he denied [him], saying, Woman, I do not know him. | 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. |
| 58 And after a short time another seeing him said, And *thou* art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. | 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. |
| 59 And after the lapse of about one hour another stoutly maintained it, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him, for also he is a Galilaean. | 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." |
| 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, [the] cock crew. | 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. |
| 61 And the Lord, turning round, looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. | 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." |
| 62 And Peter, going forth without, wept bitterly. | 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
| 63 And the men who held him mocked him, beating [him]; | 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. |
| 64 and covering him up, asked him saying, Prophesy, who is it that struck thee? | 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" |
| 65 And they said many other injurious things to him. | 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. |
| 66 And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both [the] chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying, | 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. |
| 67 If *thou* art the Christ, tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not at all believe; | 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, |
| 68 and if I should ask [you], ye would not answer me at all, nor let me go; | 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. |
| 69 but henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. | 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." |
| 70 And they all said, *Thou* then art the Son of God? And he said to them, *Ye* say that I am. | 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." |
| 71 And they said, What need have we any more of witness, for we have heard ourselves out of his mouth? | 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips." |
